Whale Witch

  In this intricate masterpiece by Noongwook, the artist explores the power and spirituality of women and the enduring connectivity between humans and nature.  The woman in the center is given polar bear claws to show her strength.   She presses her lips into a whistle to call the whale.  The whistle, the claws, and the whale form mask above her head emphasize her multifaceted relationship to the animals.  On one side of the base, two polar bears are locked in a warm embrace showing that there is love and tenderness in addition to strength.  Behind the polar bears sits the unassuming, peaceful form of an ordinary female figure because each and every woman holds within herself this awe-inspiring complexity.
