Reflecting the native belief in the connectivity of all things, the shaman's body takes on the form of a whale.  He holds a drum as part of a ceremony and the feather in his mouth is an artistic representation of a shamanistic principle that the mouth is a gateway for the supernatural.  The body and drum are made from fossil walrus ivory, it is accented with ptarmigan feathers and a strip of baleen at the side.
